A sailing barge rests beside a waterside cottage while two figures pause in conversation near a horse drawn cart. Beyond them, the river widens into the distance beneath a sky glowing with

Many of the artists who studied with him would later be regarded as the ‘Edinburgh School’ and known for their alternative approach to genre painting

with such a decorous array of nature’s opulence on his doorstep

and Rousseau is plainly visible

The painting is housed in a coved gilded frame and signed in the lower left
