brass umboThe umbo is crafted from brass. It is well suited to early medieval shields such as Germanic and late Roman shields. Similar shield finials were also employed by the Roman auxiliae from the 1st century AD. The shield knob is equally well suited to the construction of ancient Greek or Etruscan shields, or later 15th16th century Renaissance shields.
