1932年出生於日本大阪。醫學博士，目前為京都大學名譽教授及久保田腦研顧問。1957年畢業於東京大學醫學系後，繼續攻讀研究所。大學三年級時前往美國奧勒岡州立醫科大學留學。研究所畢業後，進入京都大學靈長類研究所，負責猴子的額葉構造與功能的研究工作。曾擔任教授及研究所所長。1970年開始研究前額葉皮質，研究貢獻包含發現了與圖形認知和記憶有關的視覺中樞等，是大腦前額葉皮質研究界的佼佼者。
