Signed in the lower left and housed within a highly decorative frame. Working back from this date gives our subject a birth year of 1588 and to put that into context

The painting is housed within a gilded swept frame with central and corner ornamentation

The artist has skilfully built up the oils in certain areas to give the painting a deeply textured (impasto) finish

Little is known about Brünnich but it’s possible that he was the son of a well-known Danish zoologist by the same name
