Early 17th-Century Dutch School, Portrait Of A Swedish Officer With An Anchor & Ceremonial LangdebeveThis heavily inscribed early 17th century half length portrait depicts an officer wearing a silk doublet with a gorget, presented in a feigned oval. Hes standing alongside an anchor and ceremonial langdebeve, in reference to his motto Per Mare Per Terras (by sea, by land). Its plausible that this portrait was produced posthumously and relates to a significant military leader, as one of the inscriptions translates as Rise Again In Hope. Its dated 1638

Light craquelure but good condition overall

he’s known to have worked in Italy

and specimens of his works shown

Kvapil began to exhibit at notable salons and his style was distinctly more modernist that the old masters he studied

We’ve undertaken a great deal of research on this piece to conclude that it was created in around 1620
